I never realized Pancake-a-rama; a global breakfast adventure could be so interesting. There were so many varieties of pancakes! Each one tells a story, of tradition, creativity, and family. It is amazing how the same simple ingredients can turn into something completely unique depending on where you are in the world.

Pancake-a-rama; a global breakfast adventure

I have always loved to travel, and the more I learn about these international pancake traditions, the more I want to explore them in person. Would not it be fun to visit different countries just to experience their pancakes, from street-side crepe stands in Paris to dosa stalls in India?

  7. Unicorn Pancakes – Add Fruity Pebbles and mini marshmallows for a fun, colorful treat that kids (and adults!) will love.
  8. Dream Pancakes – Combine chocolate chips and small marshmallows. Try semi-sweet, milk, or mini chips for a fun twist.
  9. Sunday Pancakes – Top your chocolate chip pancakes with sliced bananas and fresh strawberries for a sweet weekend finish.
  10. Confetti pancakes – add fruity pebbles to your pancakes mix.
  11. Emma’s favorite waffles – After making the waffle spread Nutella over the top liberally

Pancakes Around the World

  1. American Pancakes – Thick and fluffy thanks to baking powder, these are the classic breakfast favorite, usually served with butter and maple syrup.
  2. French Crêpes – Thin, delicate pancakes that can be sweet or savory. Sweet crêpes are filled with fruit or chocolate, while savory versions (called galettes) use buckwheat flour and are stuffed with cheese, meats, or vegetables.
  3. English Pancakes – Similar to crêpes but traditionally enjoyed with sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice.
  4. Germany – “Pfannkuchen” – Slightly thicker and eggier than American pancakes. Fun fact: in Berlin, “Pfannkuchen” actually refers to a jelly-filled doughnut!
  5. Russia – “Blinis” – Small yeasted pancakes made with buckwheat flour, often topped with smoked salmon, sour cream, or even caviar.
  6. Japan – “Okonomiyaki” – A savory Japanese pancake packed with cabbage, batter, and toppings like pork, shrimp, and okonomiyaki sauce.
  7. Japan – “Dorayaki” – Two fluffy pancakes sandwiched with sweet red bean paste in the center.
  8. Korea – “Jeon (전)” – Savory pancakes made from flour, eggs, and ingredients like scallions (pajeon), seafood, or kimchi.
  9. China – “Cong You Bing” – Flaky, savory scallion pancakes made with dough instead of batter and filled with chopped green onions.
  10. India – “Dosa” – Thin, crispy pancakes made from fermented rice and lentil batter, served with sambar and coconut chutney.
  11. Vietnam – “Bánh Xèo” – Crispy, golden Vietnamese pancakes made with rice flour, turmeric, and coconut milk, then filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts.
  12. Ethiopia – “Injera” – A spongy, slightly sour flatbread made from teff flour that doubles as a plate and utensil in Ethiopian cuisine.
  13. Sweden – “Raggmunk” – Potato pancakes often served with fried pork and lingonberries (which are like small, tart cranberries).
  14. Poland – “Naleśniki” – Thin pancakes filled with sweet cheese, jam, or fruit, then rolled up like a dessert wrap.
  15. Brazil – “Tapioca Pancakes” – Made from hydrated tapioca starch, they’re chewy and crepe-like, perfect for sweet or savory fillings.
  16. Netherlands – “Poffertjes” – Mini, fluffy pancakes made with yeast and buckwheat flour, traditionally served with powdered sugar and butter.
  17. Finland – “Lettu” and “Pannukakku” – Lettu are thin pancakes fried in a pan, while pannukakku is a baked oven pancake—both equally comforting.
